We as a human being has very little range of Wavelength that we can see. Electromagnetic radiation in this range of wavelengths is called visible light or simply light. A typical human eye will respond to wavelengths from about 390 to 700 nanometers. 

To unleash the basics of colour science, first we have to understand how do we even see colours.
Seeing color requires light. When light comes into the eye, it travels to the retina, bounces around, and triggers certain nerves. This sends a signal to your brain. The brain helps translate this signal into an image. In fact, the brain actually plays a big part in how we see color. 

There are three kinds of cones typically found in the human eye: red, blue, and green.It’s these three kinds of cones that work together and make your mind believe and allow you to see millions of color shades.

So briefly, The light which contains all the seven colours struck object you are seeing. One Wavelength reflects the object depends on the actual colour (maybe!) It has. Eyes and Mind conclude what type of colour is.

But the point is when any type of light struck the object , Object absorb all the other wavelength lights and reflect ONLY one. 

Red apple reflects red and absorb all the other Wavelengths other than Red. Infact we can say Apple's surface absorb all the colours other than Red. Now, if that surface absorb all the other colours then what kind of colour It gets? Other than Red, Right? Thats why Red apple has all the other colours but NOT RED!!

So, The Red apple you are seeing is not Red!
That blue jacket is of all the colours but NOT BLUE!
That green leaf you are seeing is NOT GREEN but of all other colours!

You think Black is absence of colour? WRONG.
Black body has all the colours because that surface absorb all the colours and reflects NONE. Black is absence of colour BUT it's for Retina not for body.
